FamilySearch, Part 3: Correcting Errors and Adding Source Citations

When: Tuesday, June 14, 2022, 7:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)
Facilitator: Kathy Tarullo, Director of the Arvada Family History Center

FamilySearch Logo Description: We will be finishing a 3-part series on FamilySearch.org. The overall purpose of FamilySearch.com is to help you discover your family and, in turn, discover a bit about yourself. Family Tree is different from other similar genealogy sites in that it is a single, public tree linked together in families, rather than a site that only allows users to create and manage their own private trees. This distinction means that everyone works together on the same data, allowing for the potential to connect every member of the human family. Kathy will focus on making corrections and adding sources. Email or bring any other questions you might have.

Everything you want to learn about Wiki Tree
When: Tuesday, July 12, 2022, 7:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)
Facilitator:
Steve Lake, BGS Member

WikiTree LogoDescription: BGS’s long time member, Steve Lake, has been using Wiki Tree for 7 years. WikiTree is all about collaboration. In this internet era genealogy utilizes many high-tech tools, but today’s rapid communication facilitates good old-fashioned information sharing. Many tree builders are not prepared for an open shared tree. Many would ask, “I already built my family tree. Why would I want to start over and build a new one?”

My experience was that starting over and transferring my tree information took my new WikiTree profiles to a higher level of proving sources, as well as the memorials on Find-a-Grave and profiles on FamilySearch.

Another element is conflict resolution. “One cousin says Aunt Mabel was born in 1902 and another says 1903.” This requires negotiation and compromise. While the profile has only one field for each vital, the body of the biography can accommodate multiple versions and include explanations. Every version is valuable and being able to compare often settles issues.
