Special Interest & Focus Groups

Our BGS Special Interest Groups (SIGs) (or Focus Groups) are communities within our broader organization that serve to support our members that have a mutual interest in a specific genealogical area. They typically meet monthly depending on the interests of the members and the group’s facilitator.  These SGIs aim to advance knowledge in a specific field of genealogy in the group by:

  • Offering opportunities for discussion, questions, and sharing of information, skills and experiences among genealogists.
  • Having subject matter experts share their knowledge.

Volunteer Opportunities! We would love to form several more SIGs, but we need to recruit a leader or facilitator for each group.

2nd Tuesday Genealogy Group

Purpose: This SIG or Focus Group is for those interested in using various genealogical tools or are seeking additional information on a particular genealogy topic.  Topics will be decided upon by the members of the group in coordination with the leader.  The leader will use a variety of resources from subject matter experts on YouTube to individuals sharing their experience and knowledge on the selected topic.  Occasionally an outside subject matter expert may be called upon for their expertise.

Meets: Monthly, February – November; second Tuesday at 7:00 PM (Mountain Time)

DNA Interest Group

The Longmont Genealogical Society (LGS) has invited genealogical society members to participate in their Northern Colorado Regional (NoCo) DNA Study Group.  Their DNA Study Group meets virtually via Zoom on the 2nd Wednesday after their regular Membership Meetings until other arrangements are made.

Purpose: For 2022, the DNA Group will study the book “Genetic Genealogy in Practice” by Blaine T. Bettinger and Debbie Parker Wayne.  This is a Study Group not an instructed class; therefore, volunteers are needed to sign up to lead/moderate future month’s discussions!
Facilitator: Mick Mickelson (mickmickel@gmail.com)
Meets: Monthly, second Wednesdays at 3:00 PM following the regular LGS Membership Meetings at 1:00 PM (Mountain Time).
